Harryween, Night 1: Fan Fashion by Liz Brown

If you’ve been around here for a minute, you know I’ve document Harry Styles’ fans’ fashion at almost every single New York show (night 1 and night 3). But the Harryween show: that was my Met Gala. I have been looking forward to this night for SO long and I definitely went a bit overboard, documenting over 200 (!!!) looks!

With each show, I’ve organized the photos in different categories, mostly for my own sanity. For this show, I arranged them in correlation with the song titles from Harry’s two albums. Enjoy!

P.S. If you’re in this post, details on how to obtain your image are at the bottom. Thank you!

1. Meet Me in… Madison Square Garden

Imagine being the person Harry dressed like, because I cannot imagine.

2. Sign of the Times

3. Carolina

4. Two Ghosts

5. Sweet Creature

6. Only Angel

7. Kiwi

This category/song title I took a little less literally and based the section on the line about the black dress—so the looks are black dresses or all-black outfits.

8. Ever Since New York

This section I made about creativity and nostalgia and the way we will all feel looking back on this someday.

9. Woman

Yes, I stretched this category a little, but we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do. I took the “romantic comedies” line and just turned it into a section of movie-and-character-inspired outfits!

10. From the Dining Table

This is very literal. These costumes are things you’d find on a dining table. By that I mean food.

1. Golden

2. Watermelon Sugar

I put all the Grammy’s inspired looks here (from the “Watermelon Sugar” performance) and the watermelon and strawberry looks.

3. Adore You

First of all, I am obsessed with this group “Adore You” costume. Second, I really ran with the fish theme and included our other “under the sea” outfits here, too.

4. Lights Up

5. Cherry

We had a lot of fun pink outfits, so while, yes, I know cherries are mostly red, I felt like it still sort of worked and all felt cute together. And when you listen to “Cherry” it really feels like a pastel song.

6. Falling

They made this replica outfit to look like something worn at the real Los Angeles Beachwood Cafe!

Fall outfits… the song “Falling.” Yes, this is a bad dad joke.

The yellow suit outfit is a replica of what Harry wore to the 2020 BRIT Awards where he performed—you guessed it—”Falling.”

7. To Be So Lonely

Is anyone more lonely than superheroes and superstars?

8. She

9. Sunflower, Vol. 6

10. Canyon Moon

11. Treat People With Kindness

This category sort of became a catch-all, especially for groups, but that doesn’t mean your costume wasn’t amazing! That just means your energy and care for each other and kindness was what shone through the most.

Harry Styles, Love On Tour New York: Fan Fashion, Pt. 2 by Liz Brown

Welcome back to fan fashion at Harry Styles Love On Tour! Last time, I grouped the photos by a variety of different categories and I found that worked really well. So this time I did the same thing, but with different categories—primarily by color and described by lyrics. The first set of photos is the only exception, as I couldn’t resist a good Gossip Girl pun for the steps images. Can you blame me?

You know you love me…

xoxo, Love On Tour

On a couple different occasions, I ran into the same people I photographed on night one! Our friendly banana sunflower was one of those! I love that this creative endeavor has now become an avenue of connection. If you ask me why I love photography, that opportunity for connection is at the top of the list.

“strawberry lipstick state of mind”

If you guessed that this section is full of pink and pink-adjacent outfits, then you’re right!

“in a black dress”

Soooo… I took some liberties with this section (meaning if one person in the group had one article of black clothing, I put the photo here), but I feel like it all still vibes, right?

Remember the sparkly cowboy hat from October 3rd? She’s baaaaaack! Once again, I loved recognizing folks from the early tour date. So fun!

“pay attention, I hope that you listen,
'cause I let my guard down”

This show had some amazing earrings and they definitely merited their own section.

“same lips red, same eyes blue”

This section is all about those red and blue outfits (duh).

can someone find me a Harry Styles lyric
about the color green?

“you’re so golden”

Both sides of this sign had Taylor Swift lyrics and honestly we love to see it.

“I've got your face, hung up high in the gallery”

While signs stole the show during the first MSG show, it was the cardboard cutouts that dominated the third sold-out night. The queen of England was my particular favorite, but I was informed that the last fellow is actually someone in Harry’s band—with his face stuck on Harry’s body, which is pretty funny.

“she’s dressed as a banana”

This photo was really cute and didn’t fit in any exact category so it’s bookending this post (or maybe just ending it). But I want to specifically clarify that I am not implying that anyone in this image is a banana.

The End

Harry Styles Estorie-2.jpg

Over the pandemic, I thought a lot and wrote a little about the way fans shape a concert experience. That’s why livestreams—while a creative shift during a difficult season—weren’t the same. So much of a live music experience is in the way we experience it together. Even if you show up alone, you aren’t alone, not really.

I knew this intellectually, but it didn’t really set in fully until I went to a One Direction dance party about a month ago.

There was no band there, just a DJ, but everyone still dressed up. In some ways, they dressed up even more than they would at a One Direction show because there was no chance that any band member would see them, so they could be their funnest, nerdiest fan selves. They showed up in the most unique shirts and outfits and they showed up ready to dance. I think this is fan culture and community at its best and most pure and most beautiful.

My friend Maggie and I ended up at the back of the room and to our right was a group of friends. I don’t even remember the song, but at one point they put their arms around each other, singing and dancing and and jumping and swaying. Tonight. Together. Happy. Alive.

I knew I was going to write this story for this blog post after that dance party. Then this morning I woke up to a video of the Kiwi Pit. Watch this and tell me it’s not about the feeling, it’s not about being together, it’s not about the midnight memories we make dancing together to the best song ever (sorry, I couldn’t resist).

This post is divided into titled sections and there’s information at the very bottom about how to get ahold of me if you see yourself in one of the photos or if you’d like to hire me! Thank you for reading, for showing up, for dancing.

The Power of Harry Lambert

Harry Styles Estorie-37.jpg

A quick aside: I asked the folks above for a photo, assuming they were all friends and coordinated this look. When I finished shooting, I asked them if they planned it. Not only did they not plan it, but they didn’t even know each other! They literally just randomly ended up in line together—the odds!

Harry Styles Estorie-127.jpg

If you’re new here, Harry Lambert is Harry Styles’ stylist and one of the top people I’d want to work with someday (if you’re reading this, please email me: estorie@outlook.com!). I studied styling and really respect his eye and the way he can put together a unique outfit that embodies what’s next. Innovation and creativity. That’s the thing.

He was the one who put Harry in the iconic leather suit and boa outfit at the Grammy’s. That look was worn one single night and Harry hasn’t been spotted in a boa since. But you wouldn’t believe how many boas I saw outside Madison Square Garden. That man’s power to influence an entire generation of fashion! We love to see it.

One of the other iconic looks he’s revived is 70’s-style pants (and pantsuits) that we have seen on Harry Styles since his 2017-2018 tour.

Harry Styles Harry Lambert Estorie-5.jpg

Last but not least, Harry Lambert styled Harry Styles in the now-Tik-Tok-viral JW Anderson cardigan. Harry Styles wore this look on Good Morning America in late 2019. Shortly after, the pandemic hit and homebound fans took to learning knitting and crocheting, teaching themselves how to make this cardigan. Instead of getting annoyed at the imitations or trying to shut them down, the brand instead responded with gratefulness, thanking fans and even releasing their exact pattern to make creating it even easier! That’s really treating people with kindness, am I right?

Just kidding, I don’t think going anywhere alone has to be lonely. Honestly, it can be pretty fun! As someone who has gone to a lot of concerts alone, I have so much respect for the folks who love something enough to show up alone, all dressed up and ready to dance in a crowd full of strangers. It’s a unique sort of bravery and vulnerability. And that’s far more beautiful than lonely.

Harry's Boa Dupes for under $100 by Liz Brown

It’s been a week since the Grammy’s, but I cannot stop thinking about Harry Styles’ leather suit and green boa and based on what I’ve seen on Tik Tok, I know I’m not the only one. If the past week of percolating on his fashion choices have led you to the decision that you also need a boa, I’m here to help.

Last Sunday, as soon as Harry Styles finished his sultry leather-clad performance, I immediately headed to a combination of Google, Etsy, Depop, Poshmark, Ebay, and Asos to find a similar scarf or boa. While I’ve seen a lot of Tik Toks and even an article on The Cut about where to find a similar piece, most of them were not the same texture or length—or they were over $100, which is more than my non-existent scarf budget.

So I’m here to help you out. First, I’m going to walk you through how I found the right type of scarf. My hope is this will assist you in finding your own Gucci look-alikes in the future. Then I’ll show you the best options I found. If you’re not curious about my process, just keep scrolling to see the boas I found!

Before we jump in, here’s a photo of the original boa. I cannot find the source of the image (if you know who the photographer is, please comment so I can credit them!), but I do know that Harry’s stylist is also named Harry and he is incredible. I’m pretty sure the background floral, just like the outfit, is a Gucci original.

HS_grammys-1.jpg

I am not trying to remake this outfit, so matching the exact colour is not important to me. I don’t want to be Harry Styles. I want to incorporate parts of his look into my own style. Therefore, I didn’t search specifically for a green boa.

There’s two other things (besides the colour) that I immediately noticed about the boa: the texture and the length.

The texture is not feathered. I also realized pretty quickly that it’s not knitted or crocheted. It’s definitely sewn fabric of some sort and more of a furry texture, so I began my search with searching terms like “furry scarf,” “furry boa,” “fuzzy scarf,” and “fuzzy boa” on sites on Depop, Poshmark, and Etsy, trying to find a match. When that did not bring up the type of boas I was looking for, I began figuring out what kind of fur the scarf was made of. It really reminded me of Almost Famous’ iconic Penny Lane coat. (Once again, this is a random internet photo; I obviously did not take this.)

almost-famous_1999_color-35mm_penny-lane_coat_photo-by-neal-preston_000000310005.jpg

Clearly, this coat is a 70’s piece, but I know similar styles were revived in the 90’s and 2000’s. This style also reminds me of “sherpa” texture and “shearling” texture. I wasn’t sure if those were quite the right terms, but I began searching under combinations of those keywords: the decades and the textures. This got me a little closer, but I still wasn’t finding exactly what I wanted.

Somewhere along this search trajectory, I found the key: Mongolian lamb fur. This texture was pretty darn close and I took those key words back to those same sites and to Google. Knowing what tidbits I do about Harry Styles and Gucci, I guessed that the actual scarf was faux fur. However, I could not find any quality faux Mongolian lamb fur options in my budget. If you find any faux or vegan-friendly and budget-friendly options, please send them my way, so I can add them to my list (I’ll credit you)!

At this point I did begin to find several new and vintage options that were similar to the Gucci piece. I closed those tabs of the ones that were well over $100—not in my “artist survives a pandemic” budget—and added in my final search criteria: boa length

I’m nowhere near the guy on Tik Tok who uses random photos of people’s houses and fridges and furniture to estimate their heights, but I’ll do my best with some simpler math here. If we estimate Harry to be 6 feet tall and the boa to be double his length, minus about a foot on either end, his is at least 10 feet long. I’m only just over 5 feet tall, that means I’m looking for a boa that’s about 8 feet long. I double checked the length of a traditional woman’s boa and it’s 7 to 10 feet, so that checks out. Most of the scarves were in inches or centimeters, so I quickly calculated how many inches I’d be looking for in a boa: at least 84”. Only one of the options I found looked to be nearly that long, so that’s the option I chose. I wish it was vintage because that’s more sustainable and I’m a sucker for a unique item, but the vintage pieces I found were much shorter. However, what you wear is up to you! Maybe the length won’t be a deal-breaker for you, so I’ll include some of those shorter vintage options, as well.

Without further ado, my favourite boas:

  1. Jayley’s Mongolian Fur Long Scarf for $51.46

mongolian-fur-long-scarf-p1466-26367_image.jpg

Yes, I’d style it differently, but the texture of this scarf from Jayley is almost a match for Harry’s Gucci boa. The only question mark I had was the length. It’s not listed anywhere on the site, and I didn’t want to risk missing out by waiting for an email back from their customer service on sizing. I knew I wanted a minimally-7-foot-long piece, so googled what a 7-foot scarf looked like and the image from L.L.Bean that appeared looked to be a similar length to this piece. Overall, this seemed like the option that was the closest to the Gucci piece in both length and texture and it was less than $100. I ordered it in orange; stay tuned to see if it is long enough and looks good in person. After ordering, I imagined an orange fluffy boa paired with a leather suit and how I’ll probably look like a spokesperson for Halloween and I guess that’s just who I am now.

2. 100% real Mogolian lamb fur scarf from Ebay for $36

s-l1600 (1).jpg

This scarf is 170cm, which is about 5.5 feet—the longest of the other scarves and boas I found. It’s also cheaper, which gives it extra points in my book. The main different between this boa and Harry’s—besides length—is the fluffiness. This one is a little fuller. But the colour is “watermelon red!” Is it fate? Do you need this?

3. Sky Blue Mongolia Lamb Fur Boa from Ebay for $54.30

s-l500.png

First off, I love the color of this boa. If I could have a boa of any colour, this would be it, hands down. Harry can keep his Oscar-the-Grouch-green—give me all the Cookie-Monster-adjacent blue. However, if you scroll down to the description, it’s only 51” inches: barely over 4 feet. The photo shows the length well, too. It’s definitely shorter than I wanted, which is what caused me to pass on this one.

4. Boa from Tibetan lamb skin from Etsy for $86

il_1588xN.2092225782_nj2x.jpg

While this scarf is only 5 feet long, I love the colour palette so much that I almost didn’t want to share it. But someone deserves to own it, and I hope that person is you!

5. Fur Scarf from Etsy for $96

il_1588xN.1706094455_4849.jpg

Pros of this scarf: the texture is perfect. By buying on Etsy, you are also supporting a small business. It comes in basically any colour you could possibly want. The main con is the longest length is only 60.” However, since it’s sold by a maker and not a corporation, you could possibly inquire about a custom piece.

6. Mongolian Lamb Boa Scarf White Tibetan Fur from Ebay for $99.95

s-l1600.jpg

This boa is very similar to the blue one. Obviously the color is different, and it’s 60” long instead of 51,” making it about 5 feet instead of 4. It’s also more expensive, so that ranked it lower on my list.

7. Real Tibetan / Mongolian lamb fur Scarf from Etsy for $89

il_1588xN.1456201817_533j.jpg

This Etsy shop has some good classic colours like black and red. They are what seems to be the Etsy average furry scarf length of 55.”

7. Real Tibetan / Mongolian lamb fur scarf from Etsy for $95

il_1588xN.2557291431_gn6w.jpg

This Etsy store also has a lavender scarf that is to die for. Both the lavender and fuchsia are 55”, so under 5 feet, which is why they’re ranked lower. But image either of them paired with this Lisa Says Gah dress—I cannot handle it.

In conclusion…

If you’re a fan of Harry’s recent Gucci vibe, I hope one of these scarves or boas finds a home in your closet. If not, I am impressed that you have read all the way to the bottom of an article about affordable boas! Kudos! You can’t see it, but I’m raising my glass of bedtime-flavored tea (whatever that means) to you. Be sure to check out online retailers like Asos, resale sites like Depop and Poshmark, and vintage hotspots like Etsy and Ebay as this trend takes off! Link me to your favourite pieces! Do you want a follow-up post about how to style my boa when it arrives? Comment below and let me know!

Last but not least, how do you feel about this trend? Would you rock a furry boa this spring or fall?
